Mankind's fascination with artificial light is as old as history. His
ability to produce it has been slow to develop and always costly. By the
late 18th century colonial Americans had begun to regard interior lighting
as a means of artistic expression. People and institutions of means often
flaunted their stature in the display and use of many simultaneously
lighted candles.
Colonial American chandeliers were more folksy than their European ancestors. Wood,
tin, brass and glass were fashioned into a variety of shapes and
configurations including drums, lemons, bells, and tulips as well as the
more conservative vases and urns. Most chandeliers were hung quite close
to the table to maximize the light they gave to display their beauty. We
hang them so in our shop.
Our chandeliers offer authenticity, mood, and a chance to shed a little
light on the past.
