On page 195 of a book we've often enjoyed called The Story of American
Furniture, there is a picture of a Windsor chair that looks fundamentally like
ours' shown here. The picture is captioned "The cradle of the
Declaration of Independence" and it shows Thomas Jefferson's
writing Windsor. The original chair is guessed to have been made around
1760 with repairs and reconstructions as late as 1810. While people tend
to regard Jefferson as a statesman, he was also an architect and
engineer of considerable ability.
Whether Jefferson built the original chair himself or simply
commissioned it from his design isn't clear. Quite clear however, is
that his mind, like so many of his colleagues' (political or otherwise)
was open and free. Not unlike his vision for a fledgling nation, he saw
that even furniture could be a wonderful blend of functional creativity
and artistic refinement.
