If one quality was common to most 18th century American Colonial furniture builders, it was their tendency to be creative. Sometimes it was expressed inventively as in Ben Franklin's rocker, and sometimes in purely artistic terms with rich finishing techniques and decoration. Unencumbered by the dictates of production oriented design, craftsmen largely responded to the wishes of their customers. (What a stimulating concept.)
