This is our web catalog of Antique 18th Century colonial furniture
reproductions. It is also a measure of our passion for the period. In
its presentation, we hope to bring you to a time when a craftsman's mallet
could be heard amid the clatter of a horse and wagon. We want to show you
where the planners of a shining nation may have rested to dream. And of
course, we'll boast a bit about our wares.
What is James Dew & Sons?
After all, we could be a slick marketing company or a huge factory, though
happily we are neither. Ours is a small family business. The chairs and
tables, cupboards, dressers, chests, beds, and all that follow are exactly
as they were two hundred years ago--- rendered to the measure and of the
materials in use, finished softly as if by time. Each piece is completely
hand crafted and signed.
Though we ourselves build some of the pieces we sell, we have spent
years finding craftsmen who meet our highest standards. Joinery details
like mortise and tendon, and dovetailing are why these pieces will be
antiques 200 years from now.
Our finishes are our crowning achievement in capturing the essences of
our predecessors. We'll look for the spirit in the lives of the 18th
century's furniture builders. It's interesting to consider how so many of
their designs have been broadly copied yet so few of their values. For us,
preserving the spirit of a piece is as essential as faithfully reproducing
it.
We invite you to these pages. Let your imagination be your guide. We
also invite you to our store. Much of the temper in our wares is found
with touch and nearness
