antique reproduction pencil post bed beds sleep center

Colonial Americans put great stock in their beds (called bedsteads) and bedrooms. The "best bedstead" as it was known, was always in the "bedroom of state" -- or guest room. They are mentioned in great detail in the wills of many prominent people.

In more modest homes the "best bed" might have been a "slawbank", taken from the Dutch "sloap bancke" which was a space saving device that was hinged on one side to a wall, and folded up when not in use... a precursor to our hide-a-bed of today. Our "best beds" are presented here..
