Mid 17th century colonial settlers had little more than the most primary
pursuits . . . shelter, food and security. Little furniture was
transported from Europe, as crossing ships dedicated their cargos to
passengers and essential provisions. However, by the beginning of the 18th
century fine furniture making began to re-emerge as an artistic endeavor.
Craftsmen began to reproduce the styles remembered or passed down from
ancestral homelands.
