Margaret Lee's vision of the way folks should live was quite specific. She founded an essentially monastic sect committed to austerity and organization in all aspects of life . . .the idea being that one's mental and physical energies should be maximally dedicated to worship.

So, no frills. Still, while Shaker creed held that to sit one simply needed a surface, the builder's urge to express themselves artistically tugged them into ever finer variations on the less is more perception of design.

We don't know whether Margaret would disapprove of the reverence in which the products of her thinking are held today. Oh, yes. The name "Shaker", at least according to our dictionary, arose as a description of the movements of various parts of the worshipper's bodies during devotion.

Our steady Shaker chairs and tables reflect the finest honing of the builder's art.
